About Blue Mountain Land Trust

Our History

Photo: River in FallThe initial meeting to organize a land trust in the Walla Walla area was held on July 6, 1999.  Invitations were sent to the three local colleges, the county extension office, the Native Plant Society, Audubon, Walla Walla 2020, the Washington Fish and Wildlife Department, area farmers, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the Seattle office of the Land Trust Alliance, the inland Northwest Land Trust in Spokane, the Palouse Land trust in Moscow and other conservation groups and interested individuals.

At the initial meeting, articles of incorporation were approved to establish the Blue Mountain Land Trust (BMLT) as a Washington non-profit corporation and 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with broad powers to preserve land for recreation, education, habitat, open space, farmland, forest land and historical purposes throughout the Blue Mountain region of southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon.

Our People

As in any organization or business, the success of a Land Trust requires a committed and able Board of Directors. The Board of The Blue Mountain Land Trust is composed of area residents with a broad range of perspectives and expertise, including farming, business, law, and education.

The Board is responsible for the governance of the Land Trust, for the stewardship of its easements and properties, and for managing its finances. Board members attend monthly meetings, represent the Land Trust at community events, and participate in land trust committees.

Memberships

The Blue Mountain Land Turst is a member of the following groups and organizations:  Walla Walla Chamber of Commerce-  Look for us under both Nonprofit and Enviromental organiations.                                                                                                                               WALT- The Washington Association of Land Trusts is a nonprofit corporation formed in 2008 by 24 land trusts and conservancies from across the state.  BMLT is a charter member.                                                                                                                                           LTA- Land Trust Alliance-A national conservation organization.  The Land Trust Alliance promotes voluntary private land conservation to benefit communities and natural systems.  We are the national convener, strategist and representative of more than 1,600 land trusts across America.                                                                                                                                      Priority Projects Group (PPG)- The mission of the PPG is to identify potential conservation projects in the Walla Walla Valley and leverage available funds and technical assistance to get those projects implemented.  BMLT, Walla Walla Conservation District, TriState Steelheaders,  and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
